Mission
The primary
mission of the library is to provide user-focused, quality services and resources
in all formats (Print/Electronic) that stimulate and respond to the
informational needs and activities (teaching, learning, and research) of
faculty, staff and students at GUST.
Goals
- Identify, acquire,
organize and preserve informational resources, including print, electronic
and audio-visual formats relevant to GUST curriculum, research, and
creative activities.
- Provide timely
bibliographic access to library resources, including appropriate use of
state-of-the-art technology.
- Provide instruction for
patrons in the most effective methods of locating and retrieving
information in all formats.
- Create a forward
thinking, dynamic organization that is responsive and flexible to patron
needs in order to achieve its mission and goals.
- Encourage and enable
patrons to become lifelong retrievers, evaluators, and users of
information.
Collections
The A.M.Al-Refai Library houses a curriculum-oriented collection
containing books, e-books, journals, e-journals, audiovisual materials and
full text databases. The collection is mainly geared toward GUST degree
program requirements (Computer Science, Business Administration, Accounting
and Management Information Systems, English, etc).
The A.M.Al-Refai Library collection is divided into two
categories:
- Digital Resources
- Traditional Resources (Printed)
Digital Resources
Journals: The A.M.Al-Refai Library has access to more than
15,500 scholarly journals in digital format. The collection supports core
curriculum degree requirements, general education and elective classes. It
provides full text coverage for nearly all academic areas of study including
social science, humanities, education, computer science, engineering,
accounting and business management, and economics.
Books: The A.M.Al-Refai Library has ebrary database that has more
than 60,000 full-text books, reports, and other authoritative content from
more than 200 leading academic, STM, and professional publishers. In
addition to ebrary, A.M.Al-Refai Library subscribes to ebooks from Safari Online and
NetLibrary. The e-books are
full-text electronic versions of published books that library users can search,
and read over the Internet.
Online Databases: The A.M.Al-Refai Library has full text
databases including Business Source Premier, Academic Search Elite, ERIC,
Computer Source, SocIndex, Professional Development
Collection, Regional Business News, AACE (Association for the Advancement
of Computing in Education) Digital Library, AccessScience,
LexisNexis, JSTOR, and Communication & Mass Media Complete.
Traditional Library Resources (Printed)
Books: The A.M.Al-Refai Library has over 7,500 book titles. Books are
arranged according to the Library of Congress (LC) classification system on
the shelves.
Reserve Collection: The reserve collection
includes both items designated by faculty for their course usage as well as
highly used core texts that require limited circulation. It is located
behind the circulation desk.
Reference Collection: The reference collection
is comprised of encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauruses, atlases, almanacs,
handbooks, manuals etc. Reference items are for in-house use.
Periodicals/Journals: The A.M.Al-Refai Library subscribes to 134 periodical/journal
titles in print format. They are arranged alphabetically and are
located in the periodical area.
Audio-Visual: The Audiovisual collection
consists of video, audio-cassettes, CDs, DVDs etc. The CD & DVD collection
is available for on-site viewing.
Special Collection: The special collection comprises of Arabic books,
thesis and dissertations.
